LAUNCH OF SDCC-AP IN KUALA LUMPUR
The Statelessness and Dignified Citizenship Coalition – Asia Pacific (SDCC-AP) was officially launched on February 26, 2024. This event marked a milestone in the regional effort to address statelessness in the Asia Pacific. The launch took place during the Regional Stocktaking Session, a key gathering that set the stage for the coalition’s unveiling.
A video package was presented at the event, highlighting the coalition’s rich diversity and the solidarity among its members. The video underscored the varied backgrounds and experiences of the coalition members, all united by a common goal. Following the video, two Steering Committee members, Tahera Hassan and Azizbek Ashurov, shared their perspectives on forming the coalition. They detailed the collaborative efforts and the extensive groundwork that went into establishing the SDCC-AP, emphasising the importance of collective action in addressing statelessness.
The launch event also featured a panel discussion titled ‘Statelessness in the Asia Pacific,’ which brought together esteemed panelists Muhammad Noor, Bongkot Napaumporn, Lertluk Nira, and Deepti Gurung. Each bringing extensive knowledge and experience to the discussion, providing deep insights into the challenges and opportunities in tackling statelessness in the region. Their contributions highlighted the complexities of the issue and the need for comprehensive and inclusive strategies.
The formation of the SDCC-AP results from extensive stakeholder consultations, and the commitment of numerous organizations and experts dedicated to the cause. The coalition’s journey began with initial regional consultations, where stakeholders identified key issues and strategized on collaborative approaches. This journey continued through various engagements and culminated in the most recent gathering at the World Conference on Statelessness in Malaysia. Throughout this process, the coalition has been driven by a spirit of unity, dedication, and a shared vision of eradicating statelessness and promoting equal citizenship rights across the Asia Pacific region.
As the coalition moves forward, SDCC aims to leverage its diverse membership and broad expertise to implement effective solutions, advocate for policy changes, and support stateless individuals in their quest for recognition and rights.
