Bina Ramanand
Bina Ramanand has been a dedicated advocate for gender justice for over seventeen years. She co-founded the Foreign Spouses Support Group (FSSG) in 2007 to promote and protect the rights of Malaysian binational families.
Motivated by her own challenges as a foreign spouse raising Malaysian children, Bina’s mission has centered around addressing the significant hurdles faced by Malaysian Binational families. From 2007 to 2019, Bina developed FSSG, which led to the establishment of Family Frontiers, a registered organization she now leads. Under her leadership, Family Frontiers oversees both FSSG and the Malaysian Campaign for Equal Citizenship. Bina has been at the forefront of advocating for law and policy reforms, focusing on ensuring equality and non-discrimination for Malaysian women and their children in binational families.
Bina actively engages with Members of Parliament and government agencies, making submissions for international treaties such as CEDAW, CRC, and UPR. Her advocacy efforts, particularly through the Campaign for Equal Citizenship, have focused on securing the rights of overseas-born children of Malaysian women, garnering national attention and leading to government commitments to legislative reforms.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bina played a crucial role in advocating for the return of foreign spouses and children of Malaysians experiencing state-enforced family separation, resulting in the reunion of many families.
Bina is an active participant and speaker at national and international forums and serves on the steering committees of the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights and the Asia Pacific Statelessness and Dignified Citizenship Coalition. In addition she is a Board Member of the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development and also a member of the UNHCR Global Alliance Task force, she is also a member of various coalitions addressing gender equality, law reform, and the rights of migrant women
and stateless populations.
